Learning without the Classroom

Most of us over 30 years old remember the traditional classroom. Sit in class; listen to a lecture or demonstration; go home and do homework. Then the cycle repeats. But learning continues outside the classroom. Today's technological advancements allow us to learn on the fly. Video is one of the most common options.

Skills through YouTube

YouTube offers so many possibilities for users. For some, it is a chance to take a break from it all and find entertainment. When something breaks in our homes, we search YouTube for the fix (this has come in handy many times). Others use it as an opportunity to learn a new skill. Everything from learning software to playing the piano is available with a few short clicks. Learning a skill is accelerated because the information is in our hands.

A 2018 survey found Generation Z students ranked YouTube as their preferred learning tool. 78% of teachers responding to the survey agree it is important to learning. Visual reinforcement is important for learning as 65% of the population is visual learners.

LinkedIn Learning for Micro-credentials

Professional development is an expectation of many professionals. Micro-credentials are growing in popularity and are here to stay. Opportunities to bundle bite-sized learning while maintaining flexibility is preferred among busy professionals.

LinkedIn Learning is one of many websites that offer courses to learn a skill. Learners can create their educational experience a la carte or follow a learning path. While this service requires a paid subscription, the value worth the investment. Those who complete a course can earn badges and certificates for their new skill.

The ability to learn a new skill is invaluable. Video has shifted the way we learn as a culture. We learn information in small bites and are more engaged than ever.
